Principal Software Engineer

The Commercial Software Engineering (CSE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers looking to leverage the latest technologies to address their toughest challenges and transform their industries using cloud-based solutions. We work closely with our customers' engineers to develop code to jointly solve their biggest challenges to accelerate progress in their organization. In the process, we help shape the future of our own platforms by partnering with our product groups to improve them. We pride ourselves on making contributions to open source and making our platforms easier to adopt.

We work side-by-side with our customers to collaboratively innovate custom solutions tailored to solve their challenges. Our work involves the development of high-impact, open source software assets that contribute to the Microsoft platform that are broadly applicable. We build frameworks and other tools to make it easier for developers to use Microsoft platforms. We source our ideas and designs by maintaining very deep connections with these open source communities and the customers and partners that use them. We also drive innovation back into the product groups from our learnings and experiences with the customer. As a member of our Media and Communications Industry team, you will thrive in working with a variety of technologies; not just Microsoft technology.

Responsibilities

* Learning new technologies and frameworks quickly and applying them effectively
* Leading software engineering efforts while collaborating with technical and non-technical business stakeholders
* Giving thoughtful feedback, nurturing an inclusive engineering environment, championing engineering fundamentals and providing clarity and mentorship for team members to grow
* Write clean and thorough design documents and code that exemplify quality, simplicity, and maintainability
* Be a mentor for design reviews, code, and test cases
* Exhibiting technical leadership throughout the broader CSE organization, with the Microsoft product teams and the OSS community
* Working hands-on with your team and our customers through design and implementation, setting examples for good engineering practices and coding along the way
* Continuously improving our ability to deliver quality solutions through evolving our engineering process and technical capabilities
* Design and influence design, implementation, and architectural direction
* Drive architectural consolidation and simplification
* Write exemplary code and lead by example

Qualifications

We do not believe that any specific education major is a requirement to be successful in this role. We are open to all backgrounds and are looking for candidates with demonstrated ability to deliver on the responsibilities below.

Required Qualifications:

* 8+ years of experience shipping or running production systems and/or software, including complex production systems that run on a public cloud

Preferred Qualifications:

* Solid design and coding skills with a bias for architecture at scale
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work across company boundaries and outside of company boundaries
* Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS or similar cloud computing platforms is preferred
* Strong service delivery experience including architecture, coding, and building online services
* Experience working within and directing geographically dispersed, diverse, and virtual teams
* A Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or the equivalent
* Industry experience in media & communications a plus
* Enjoy potential future travel and are comfortable with travel up to 15%
