Terra (terra.bio) is a scalable, secure, and open-source platform for biomedical research, designed to help researchers and data scientists to focus on their science as they access data, run analysis tools, and collaborate. Microsoft is collaborating with Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and Verily Life Sciences to expanding on Terra's open, modular, and interoperable research platform, with the addition of the Microsoft Azure cloud, data and AI technologies, global capabilities and health & life science customers and partners.

We're looking for an innovative, collaborative, highly motivated Principal Data Engineering/Architect to join our Genomics effort and lead the design and implementation of the interactive data platform for assimilation, exploration, and analysis of large-scale genomics data to support biomedical research, development of precision medicines, and clinical decision making.

Responsibilities:

* Architect and implement the infrastructure needed for large-scale data exploration on server and serverless query engines.
* Build and support key data pipelines and data assets, including ETLs/ELTs that can efficiently process and store data from various genomics, biological, and clinical data sources.
* Facilitate scientific and technical explorations with other Microsoft Research, Incubation, and Product teams.
* Clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and partners.
* Help drive the development of core cloud services and components for Microsoft Genomics, including first-party services and OSS tools and applications.
* Ensure platform components adhere to all data governance requirements.

Required Qualifications:

* MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or Database Systems.
* 10+ years of experience as a software engineer/architect designing, implementing, and shipping commercial cloud services or software products.u202F
* 5+ years of experience designing and building data warehouse solutions, ETL/ELT, data pipelines, query processing and optimization, and analytics tools.
* Hands-on experience working with internals of data processing engines/frameworks and big data stacks (SQL Engines, Azure Synapse, Databricks, HDInsight, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, etc.).
* Stellar design skills along with coding proficiency in languages like SQL, C, Java, C++, and Python.
* Experience using data governance frameworks to ensure the integrity, security, availability, and privacy of data.
* Great written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
* Be self-driven and show the ability to deliver on ambiguous projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Good understanding of traditional ML and emerging deep learning techniques.
* Demonstrated leadership competencies such as creating clarity and delivering success.
* Development experience with multiple cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, and GCP).

* Experience understanding user needs, gathering requirements, and definingu202Fscope.u202F
* Experience working with health and/or lifeu202Fsciencesu202Fdata and technologies are a plus.
