Job Summary
Impacts the management, planning, development, budget, and other administrative activities of a HMRI Department. Plans, manages and monitors operations to support the activities of the department.

This position description is not intended to be all inclusive, and the employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and other management as required. The Houston Methodist Hospital reserves the right to revise or change job duties and responsibilities as the need arises.

The job duties for Research Operations Manager and Sr. are the same, with the difference being in the size and complexity of the operations being managed. The following guidelines should be used in order to determine the appropriate level:

Research Operations Mgr:

PATIENT AGE GROUP SERVED

Refer to departmental Scope of Service and Provision of Care plans, as applicable, for description of primary age groups and populations served by this job for the respective HM entity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 20%

1. Provide operations and safety management for laboratory team(s).

2. Assist PIs with administrative management of staff as needed.

3. Manages administrative personnel within the Department, e.g., personnel, space, and equipment;

SERVICE - 20%

1. Provide Department with Laboratory Administration services including purchasing of supply and equipment, maintaining required safety and operations documentation, and assisting PIs with laboratory operations management.

2. Manage/maintain laboratory environment including but not limited to coordination with HMH Building Services, HMRI Facility Manager and HMH EHS.

QUALITY/SAFETY -20%

1. Establish and maintain current Laboratory Specific Safety Manual. All laboratory safety procedures must be included in this manual, RE-62., including HSC and IBC protocols.

2. Establish and maintain Laboratory Study Methods. All laboratory procedures run in the laboratory must be included in this manual, RE-38.

3. Work with PIs to write and submit HSC and IBC applications as needed.

4. Maintain equipment inventory and work with Biomedical Engineering/GE Healthcare for regular maintenance/service.

FINANCE - 20%

1. Manages and administers grants, contracts, and budget preparations and expenditures;

2. Provide PIs and Laboratory staff support for purchase of laboratory supplies, equipment (MARS eProcurement), and services (iLab).

3. Manages all faculty cost centers within the Department and works with the faculty to identify any potential discrepancies.

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 20%

1. Assists the chair in the strategic planning for the departmental missions and growth.

2. Participate in Departments future planning and budgeting processes.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors degree in a health science field required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a healthcare professional/administrative/laboratory management capacity required including 1 year in a leadership position. Preferred experience in clinical research management.

Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.

Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.

Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
