The Facebook Reality Labs Display & Optics team focuses on moving state-of-art display and optical technologies forward for Facebooks AR/VR products. The team is responsible for developing and maturing technologies for component design, novel manufacturing processes, metrology, and system integration. The Optical Product Development team is looking for a creative Optical Systems Engineer to develop and lead new optical module development for Facebook products. You will work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, display, sensor, and other optics teams to ensure the performance and realization of optical products.
Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities
* Change the landscape of capabilities of AR and VR.
* Identify new concepts and system architectures to develop innovative processes that improve optical performance and system cost.
* Work closely across the optics, display, mechanical, and other cross-functional engineering teams to define, develop, realize, and simulate a variety of optical systems.
* Work closely with the quality, test engineering, and technical operations teams to transition architected systems into mass production.
* Distill product-level requirements to optical system design and requirements.
* Perform requirement flow-down and budgeting to various subsystems.
* Create and maintain engineering specifications.
* Specify key performance indicators, test methods, and test requirements for components and systems.
* Work closely with domestic and international vendors.
* Up to 25% domestic and international travel.
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelors degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience.
* 3+ years of industry experience working on optical systems.
* Demonstrated history of optical system engineering and cross-functional product development.
* Experience working with uncertainty and directing cross-functional teams to manage the risk portfolio at different stages of product development.
* Experience in at least one of the following optical software design packages: Zemax, CODE V, LightTools, FRED, or ASAP.
* Experience in tolerancing sequential or non-sequential optical systems.
* Experience in at least one of the following: Image quality evaluation, Stray light molding and analysis, Camera module or lens testing and characterization, Imaging optics design and manufacturing, Illumination optics design and manufacturing, Display/backlight design and development, Polarization, Visual Optics, or Optical testing and metrology.
* Experience communicating and collaborating in a cross-functional team environment.
* Experience using both logical and creative thinking to solve problems.
Preferred Qualifications
* Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
* 5+ years of industry experience.
* Experience in both sequential and non-sequential optics.
* Experience in tolerancing both sequential and non-sequential optical systems.
* Experience in statistical analysis using JMP, MATLAB, or similar programs.
* Experience working in a fast-paced startup environment.
