Job Description
The Medical Lab Tech conducts various clinical laboratory tests and procedures to obtain data and provide information for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of the Section Leader or Medical Technologist in the assigned area.

Education:
* Associates degree in a relevant science required.
Licensure & Certification:
* Preferred MLT(ASCP or equivalent) certification upon hire, MLT (ASCP or equivalent) certification required within 12-months of hire date.
Experience:
* 6 month clinical laboratory rotation in clinical laboratory science program preferred.
* Micro experience prefered but not mandatory.
Essential Functions:
* Maintains quality control records and takes appropriate action when limits are exceeded. Performs quality control procedures on a routine basis for all possible types of tests. Checks the control records for precision and accuracy to established guidelines. Takes appropriate action for out of control results.
* Enters data accurately, in a timely manner, and in accordance with laboratory policies. Retrieves results and information. Maintains patient confidentiality.
* Performs daily maintenance on laboratory equipment. Records instruments function checks an notifies Section Leader on abnormal instrument function results.
* Documents instrument maintenance and minor repairs. Documents instrument down time and malfunctions. Performs periodic maintenance according to the established requirements.
* Participates in proficiency testing surveys and makes any investigations and corrections in CAP deficiencies.
* Maintains a general understanding of test theory as acquired through formal education, experience and continuing education.
* Obtains specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, stool and gastric secretions form the patient care units or directly form the patient. Processed these specimens according to written procedure.
* Follows established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and La Porte Hospital departmental policy. Maintains cleanliness of department and working area at all times.
* Helps compile monthly workload statistics and quality control records in the absence of the Section Leader.
* Suggests changes in workflow, instrument arrangement and techniques to increase efficiency and/or accuracy in all laboratory sections. Helps control costs where possible on reagents and supplies.
