Boeing's Material, Processes, and Physics (MP&P) Team is seeking a Senior Structural Assembly Engineer (Level 4) to join our team in Berkeley, Missouri. This individual will have theoretical and practical experience in industry and aerospace applications. The person in this role will collaborate and support engineering design, production floor, procurement and suppliers to define requirements and qualification approvals for tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes for aircraft fighters (MQ25, T7A, F18, F15). This role is mainly conducted in an office setting, however, occasional work travel is approximately 10%, as well as occasional work in production with our customers.
This role requires knowledge and experience in mechanical/structural assembly, drilling, fastening, equipment development, automation and/or portable tool technologies for both metal and composite structures. This person must be able to work with factory mechanics, as well as other organizations such as ME, QA, and IE (Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering). Initiative, teaming, planning and communication skills are needed to perform this job at the highest ability. In addition, ability to innovate and strategize, as well as work with details to drive projects to successful completion and implementation.
Position Responsibilities:
* Provides support to the automation and equipment development in the areas of composite fabrication, inspection, paint operations, assembly automation, etc.
* Applies knowledge of engineering and scientific principles to equipment design efforts, develop and implement fabrication technologies, integrate technologies in the fabrication, paint, and assembly processes
* Reviews engineering documents, drawings, and support design reviews to ensure proper selection and specification of equipment and processes for part fabrication and assembly
* Assists in the evaluation of new technologies for potential application to business needs
* Works directly with engineering, manufacturing and suppliers to perform manufacturing process improvements and implement LEAN+ / cost reductions
* Provides design engineering and production floor support for mechanical fasteners and industry standards
* Provides part modeling support, work on material substitutions and process improvements
* Familiarity with military and commercial aerospace standards, fasteners, and material properties
* Produces specifications and other documents to define requirements and manage the use of materials, parts, tools and processes in aerospace production
* Maintains compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations
* Promote standardization across multiple business activities
* Evaluates emerging technologies for potential application to new and existing platform needs
* Manages test and audit programs to qualify suppliers to applicable requirements
* Conducts analysis to characterize performance or determine reasons for failure of mechanical fasteners
* Identifies and implement corrective and preventative actions
* Supports significant technically challenging problems to resolve production issues.
* Evaluates existing technologies, developments and process improvements for potential implementation.
* Coordinates with all levels of customer organization ranging from shop floor mechanics thru superintendents, union stewards, quality managers and Lean Office, Health & Safety, etc.
* Works with the Principal Investigators (PIs) of the technology projects to assure work statements, budgets and schedules are in place to support Business unit needs
This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance Post Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
* Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
* 10+ years of experience in mechanical/structures assembly engineering and/or mechanical research and development
* Experience in mechanical fasteners
* Experience working in the aerospace industry
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
* 15+ years of experience in mechanical/structures assembly engineering or MRD
* Assembly fastener experience
* Metallic or composite structures experience
* Experience with aerospace structural design, fabrication, and repair methods for military or commercial aircraft
Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
