General Summary:
Unum is hiring for a Business Designer who will join our Digital Incubation Team providing strategic leadership and transformation services that align with and supports Unums business. You will work as a Business Designer / Process Architect in close collaboration with internal business operations, technology teams and 3rd parties to transform the business and operating models. The successful candidate will understand how emerging technologies impact operations and creates new business model opportunities, exploring how approaches commonly adopted by growth-stage start-ups could be applied at Unum. Additional responsibilities will include defining and instituting new/modified business and operating models, support business case formulation, shape conceptual solution designs and transformation roadmaps with interim and long term KPIs for key insurance processing systems.
This position requires fluency in process analysis, Capability decomposition, staffing models and application of lean/design thinking/agile principles in designing new operational models. You will ensure key stakeholder buy-in to proposed operating model changes. Working closely with business partners, digital strategists and product managers across the enterprise, this position acts as subject matter expert across key business processes and systems. This position contributes to strategic decisions at the corporate level and is involved in operational planning with business partners. This role also provides mentorship to transformation professionals
Job Specifications
* Multi-disciplinary Technology + Operations Experience
* 8+ years of experience in a technology-oriented transformation field preferred, or equivalent relevant work experience.
* Masters degree or a bachelors degree plus relevant professional experience
* Demonstrable experience taking an idea from theory and analysis into a market launch and subsequent scaled operations.
* Fluency in designing business models, decomposing into capabilities (business and technology), carrying out market research, and performing financial modeling.
* Creative thinker and operates with an entrepreneurial mindset
* Strong data-backed problem solver - Apply first principles thinking around solutions
* Strong business, operations and financial acumen along with an understanding of Lean Agile & Design thinking techniques
* Able to see the big picture, coupled with strong storytelling and communication skills (verbal and written presentation) to evangelize their vision at all levels
* Knowledge of current and emerging technologies a plus

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Analyze business processes, value streams, decision flows and work within and across functional areas to identify opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness
* Collaborate and hack together cross-disciplinary solutions that impact customer experience, operational effiencies & effectiveness and quality
* Understand how emerging technologies can fundamentally disrupt business / operations
* Defines and documents business / operating models and designs based on market research supported with required financial modeling for new-to-Unum ideas.
* Define business capabilities, detailed capability decomposition, capability gap analysis and maturity models and progression thereof
* Accountable for driving/developing business case value levers with due considerations for operational impact and building, and advancing transformation roadmaps
* Facilitate techno-functional discussions, using complex data models, with senior business and technology leaders and have a commanding presence combined with strong, clear and concise communications skills
* Synthesize across multiple different, and sometimes conflicting, inputs (data, qualitative feedback, hypothesis, etc.) into a common point of view.
* Influence actions and outcomes even without direct reporting control across people from a variety of backgrounds and areas across the operations.
* Develop and maintain an in depth understanding of Unums business operations, acts as a champion for disruptive changes and builds strong and effective partnership with business leaders
