A Senior Engineer 1 is part of a key team of Nordstrom Technology professionals that applies scientific, mathematical and social principles to design, build, and maintain technology products, devices, systems and solutions. The overall mission of the Order Management Group is to build a new Order Management System (OMS) that is reliable and scalable, as well as adaptable to ever-changing business needs. To establish a flexible and deterministic platform with continuous delivery and automation to unlock new functionality, customer experiences, and streamlined business processes. The group is responsible for the guaranteed delivery of all orders and enabling flexible integration strategies while remaining aligned with regulations. We use Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kubernetes, and Apache Kafka as the basis of our infrastructure in order to allow for easy automation, predictable outcomes, and engineering exposure to cloud technologies.
A day in the life
Your main responsibility is to help lead the technical aspects of the team and deliver in accordance with the mission and goals of the group. Key responsibilities also include ensuring technical decisions are made with data and design requirements while exposing the team to the tools and patterns that provide team growth and success. You will assist in identifying the appropriate technologies to use and evangelize the approaches, patterns, and standards across Nordstrom technology. Our space is being discovered as we go and design decisions are made as requirements and learnings are exposed. Discuss, decide, act, and measure are steps we follow to allow a just-in-time approach for technical decisions with a low level of risk.
You are going to lead discussions and decisions around event systems like event sourcing. The daily tasks will require you to switch between infrastructure as code and low-level Java or Go implementation details. As new standards are identified by the team you will drive the evangelizing of them and adoption as part of the cross-organizational engineering standards for Nordstrom technology. Communication with senior leadership and setting expectations across organizations will be expected as part of being a leader on the team.
You will guide the team on technical excellence with technologies like GCP, AWS, Go, Java, CI/CD, SOX & PCI compliance, and security standards.
You own this if you have
* 6+ years structured and multithreaded languages (Go, Java, C, C++)
* 6+ years on fast delivery: git (GitLab, github, bitbucket), CI/CD (GitLabCI, Thoughtworks Go, Jenkins)
* 4+ years cloud experience: GCP/AWS/Azure, containers (Docker, Kubernetes), serverless (Cloud Functions, Lambda)
* 2+ years eCommerce experience preferable
* 2+ years using event based systems (Kafka)
* BA/BS in Computer Science or closely related degree or equivalent practical experience
* DevOps Experience
* Automation of testing (unit, integration, acceptance, performance, contract)
* Production support tasks, analyzing incidents coming up with strategy for proof of concept to resolve the prod support issues.
* On call production support including exposure to apps/tools/process such as PagerDuty
* Production support monitoring automation tools and metrics with exposure to tools such as New Relic
