Sr. Software Engineer, Platform Enhancements Team - VMware Tanzu - Opportunity for Working Remotely

Posted on: 25 Jan 2021

Bridgeport, CT

Job Description

Our group is part of VMwares new Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU). Our Tanzu portfolio helps customers build, run, and manage their most important applications. We provide a premier application deployment experience for enterprise software developers, and this year were bringing that experience to Kubernetes.

Our teams provide network connectivity solutions for products across the Tanzu Portfolio including the Tanzu Application Service, a commercial offering of the Cloud Foundry project used by some of the largest enterprises and governments around the world. We build and maintain network proxies, container networking implementations, and distributed control planes for our VM-based and Kubernetes-based systems. We work with Go, Ruby, YAML (yes, YAML!), Kubernetes, and various open-source projects.

We have separate teams for building our new products and maintaining our older ones. Most engineers rotate between those teams on a regular basis, in order to learn from and contribute to both efforts.

Tight feedback loops drive our processes. We value test-driven development, pair programming, retrospectives, continuous integration, and working at a sustainable pace. We nurture psychological safety within teams and empower them to drive the changes necessary to obtain successful outcomes. We build software and solve problems collaboratively. Teammates are always accessible to lend a helping hand both remotely and in-person.

We prefer candidates based in Santa Monica, San Francisco or Seattle, but would consider candidates elsewhere who are able to work Pacific time zone hours.

Interested? Here is what we look for:

* You are excited to build software that is used by other software developers and the operations teams that support them, enabling enterprises to focus on their core business.

* You are interested in networking, as the application developer sees it. That means wiring up applications to each other and enabling them to consume services over the network.

* You are a strong collaborator and actively foster safe and inclusive teams. You enjoy mentoring others as much as you like learning from them. Youre experienced with pair programming or excited to try it out.

* Youre a life-long learner. You like learning new programming languages and technologies and youre flexible about which ones you use.

The following are attributes we see in successful candidates, but they are not requirements. You are strongly encouraged to apply even if you dont tick all the boxes because we want to hear from you and learn about what you can bring to the role:

* Professional experience as part of a cross-functional team, or a Computer Science degree

* Ability to dive into large codebases and contribute as you learn

* Ability to research problems (including making incremental progress when faced with technical ambiguity) and break them into discrete parts

* Professional experience with our technologies and processes (Ruby, Go, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Linux systems, Agile, Test Driven Development, XP)

* Professional experience with relevant domains, such as distributed systems, API design, and networking

* On-call experience with production-grade systems

* Interested in working in diverse and highly collaborative environments

* Contribution to thriving open source communities

* Familiarity with common development tools/stacks, such as Unix, command-line interfaces, and CI/CD systems and practices
