The Privacy Research team is on the front lines of ensuring we honor people's privacy in everything Facebook Inc. does - one of our core company priorities and the Privacy Organizations mission statement. Research is a critical function across all Privacy activities to help us execute against that mission, working with a wide array of stakeholders including external experts, internal teams, potential users. We collaboratively shape the future of privacy across Facebook Inc. through deep topical expertise, rigorous foundational research, and rich partnerships with cross-functional partners to drive action based on our insights. We aim to be recognized as experts, internally and externally, and actively shape strategy, product, process, and tool development. We are looking for a strong Qualitative Researcher to work within the Privacy Ecosystems pillar to answer key privacy questions by working closely with cross-functional partners both within the Privacy organization and across the company. Privacy Ecosystems is a critical pillar within the Privacy team with the mission to establish the conviction to build the right privacy solutions at scale, design and operationalize privacy product strategies to respond to regulation & industry changes, leveraging and improving Privacy Standards and capabilities along the way. This role will play a critical part in advancing privacy practices at Facebook and beyond in partnership and collaboration with multiple product organization, policy, communications, and external stakeholder groups particularly around protecting the privacy of youth, which is a topic that has been increasingly important around the world. This role is a part of the Privacy Ecosystems Team and thus also aimed at designing and operationalizing privacy product strategies to respond to regulation and industry changes, and leveraging and improving Privacy Standards and capabilities along the way. The ideal candidate is someone with a background in Education, Sociology, Anthropology, Developmental or Social Psychology, who has a breadth and depth of both qualitative and quantitative research, experience activating insights with a wide variety of stakeholder groups, and a sense of how to translate insights into product, policy, and strategy recommendations. Expertise or experience working with youth, education, or gaming is a plus! You will be part of a cross-functional team that includes Research, Product Management, Product Design, Policy, and Engineering to address privacy and data use challenges at scale by implementing privacy principles, processes and tools across the company. You will play a pivotal part in a growing cross-functional organization tackling some of the hardest problems in the privacy space.
Qualitative Researcher, Youth Privacy Responsibilities
* Combine strategic visioning and analytical activity, moving between macro trends and micro trends in privacy practices, and develop substantiated point of views
* Act as a thought leader in research, while advocating for people who use our products
* Design and execute studies that address the behavior and attitudes of users from a wide range of backgrounds, including young people, their families, and the institutions with which they engage using the right methodology for the right questions
* Work cross-functionally with design, product management, policy, data science, content strategy, engineering, legal and other qualitative and quantitative researchers
* Generate insights that shape how product teams think about medium- and long-term product strategy
* Distill data-informed recommendations through the lens of business impact, user experience and product strategy
* Gather and synthesize external literature review, conduct quantitative and qualitative research including co-design sessions internally and externally
* Strong strategic presence to empower teams across the company to build with privacy by design
* Communicate results and illustrate suggestions in compelling and creative ways to a broad and diverse audience, including executive and external stakeholders
* Identify opportunities to constantly improve the quality of thinking applied to privacy and data use insights
* Comfort with utilizing data to define and support hypotheses
* Collaborate closely with other researchers
Minimum Qualifications
* BA/BS/in Psychology, Anthropology, Education, Sociology, Developmental or Social Psychology, or related fields with empirical research experience
* 5+ years' experience conducting qualitative research in a corporate environment, including one of the following: concept-testing, usability, interviews, competitive analysis, diary studies, contextual inquiry/observations or ethnography
* Knowledge of research methods and experience in at least one subset of methods (e.g., survey design and quantitative data analysis)
* Experience with remote and in-person research
* Analytical, project management, and problem-solving experience
* Experience with autonomy and independent decision making to weigh tradeoffs and balance demands
Preferred Qualifications
* M.A./M.S./Ph.D, human behavior-related field, Psychology, Anthropology, Education, Sociology, Developmental or Social Psychology,or related fields with empirical research experience
* Experience with research regarding privacy and data use
* Experience conducting international or cross-cultural research
* Expertise or experience working with youth, education, or gaming
* Experience conducting research on internal company tools and processes and with internal users
* Experience with quantitative survey design and analysis and response effects, experimental design, statistical analysis
