The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial segments that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.
Role Purpose:
Ensure that the Business has a sustainable competitive advantage from the Manufacturing function. Works with the Division Staff to develop the Deep Dive and 5 year manufacturing strategy. Ensures plants have alignment to the divisions multi-year business and innovation strategies. Helps decide when and where to expand, build, and consolidate plants. Helps decide 'make' or 'outsource' decisions. Links technology, commercial, and manufacturing strategies to achieve market and business success.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develops and continuously updates the Business 5 year Manufacturing Strategy, to achieve the required performance for the Business in financial measures and marketplace success.
* Ensures that plant plans fully support and enable the Business commercial and innovation strategies.
* Develops project portfolios to achieve lowest unit manufacturing costs while maintaining required customer service levels for both short and long term.
* Develops and updates the timeline/roadmap of major manufacturing events.
* Has a detailed understanding of the projects in the Division Engineering and Innovation portfolios, to be able to integrate them into the Strategy, support their timing, and correctly prioritize them.
* Builds consensus about and documents the manufacturing assumptions for manufacturing speeds, yields, percent up-time, and other key metrics in the manufacturing processes.
* Collaborates with commercial leaders and new product development teams to adequately serve the demand/growth projections for the adjacent businesses as well as the Divisions product lines.
* Tracks and reports manufacturing performance for the business.
* Lead strategic projects tied to the overall business strategy. This includes cost reduction and facility rationalization.
* Develop and manage the manufacturing cost roadmap
* Key interface with other business functions, US based staff representative
* Completes one-time or as needed scenario analyses to facilitate decision making by Business or Plant leadership.
* Identifies near-term manufacturing issues and ensures cross-functional action plans are built to address
* Works closely with Supply Chain to create a robust strategy for capacity, both short and long term.
* Makes recommendations to the Business Staff on allocation of assets.
* Recommends when and where to expand, build, or consolidate plants.
* Recommends make vs outsource decisions.
* Drives cash improvement programs including capital and inventory reduction Performance Metrics
* Unit cost
* Division profitability (COM and/or NPAT) and Cash Flow
* Percent Market Share and Customer Service (delivery to request, customer complaints or returns, etc.)
* Capital spending & Capital effectiveness - Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)

Experiences/Education: Required:
* Bachelors degree required (BS preferred).
* 7+ years of Manufacturing or Operations experience. Progressive responsibilities in manufacturing and engineering roles in plants and divisions including Plant Operations Manager and/or Plant Engineering Manager experience.
* Developing and implementing strategy
* Experience with global manufacturing and business through work, project experience, or expatriate assignment.
* Manufacturing and/or engineering experiences throughout the product life cycle (growth and/or decline, new product introductions, turnaround situation, etc.).
* Leading projects or organizations in meeting step change performance improvements, new product or process innovation, and expanding technical capability.
* Finance acumen, particularly with manufacturing cost accounting
* Solid communication skills for all levels of organization. Developing and communicating plant manufacturing strategy and tactics.
* Building and managing collaborative relationships across functional areas.
* Matrix management leadership (Establish Direction and Create Commitment, Foster Innovation and Risk Taking, Inspire and Motivate)
* Engineering Financial Analysis & Management, Manufacturing and Operations Management, Manufacturing Strategy Formulation and Execution
Desired:
* M.B.A. or equivalent business degree.
* Experience in multiple businesses, divisions, technologies.
* Experience in staff or project roles such as Project Manager or Program Manager.
* Fluency in Mandarin or Korean (oral and written) strong preference.
Travel and Other Requirements:
* 30-40%, at times; heavier or lighter and frequent evening and/or early morning calls. Domestic and International (primarily Asia) travel.
