Department Summary

The James H Campbell Generating Complex is located in West Olive, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan between the cities of Holland and Grand Haven, Michigan. The Campbell complex helps Consumers Energy meet the energy needs of its more than 1.8 million electric customers. The Operating Department is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of three large electric generating units that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing an important commodity/service. We have excellent facilities, high fidelity training simulators, programs and procedures to train and develop our operations employees.

Job Description

Under directive supervision operates assigned power plant auxiliary equipment and assists principal operators, including such duties as:

* Operating, cleaning, and lubricating, when required, oil purifying apparatus and associated cooling apparatus, environmental equipment, heat exchangers, and other associated equipment.
* Cleaning, lubricating when required, and checking the operation of such equipment as pulverizers, boiler feed make-up apparatuses and air, gas, and liquid piping systems.
* Operating and tagging disconnect switches, oil circuit breakers, station power circuits, and other manually operated equipment in the indoor and outdoor substations; checking bearings and operation of induced draft fans, hydrogen seal oil system, and associated equipment.
* Tagging apparatus to be removed from service.
* Taking readings as required and observing and recording specified data relative to assigned equipment operation.
* Adjusting and packing pump and valve packing as directed.
* Making visual inspections of indoor and outdoor substation equipment; inspecting and checking batteries and motor generator set and other related equipment.
* Manually operating the remote hydrogen gas systems as directed and checking and recording pressure, as required.
* Operating and cleaning the demineralizing and water softening equipment including chemical treatment tanks, filter beds, and other components.
* Maintaining and inspecting all plant related fire equipment and performing other similar related work.

Required Qualifications

* High School Diploma or GED.
* 1 or more years of maintenance and/or operations activities at a power plant, industrial facility, or equivalent.
* Must be willing to work an irregular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
* Must pass a POSS assessment prior to employment.

Preferred Qualifications

* Military OR Civilian experience (power plant operator, turbine room, boiler room) and/or sewage/waste water treatment plant experience.
* This position requires satisfactory completion of a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) background check required under NERC regulations.

Essential Functions

* The individual shall exemplify safe work practices and comply with all of the companys safety standards and procedures.
* He/she must utilize effective oral and written communication skills to effectively log plant status and interact with coworkers.

Hours and Travel

* This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week in a 24/7 operation which can include irregular schedules, overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
* Travel is minimal, but may be required for training or other Company sponsored events.
* Operators must be willing to work additional hours as necessary.

Physical Requirements

* This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
* The employee must be able to talk and hear.
* He/she must be able to traverse the power plant to inspect and operate all plant related equipment.
* The employee must meet vision requirements to include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
* Temperature conditions within the plant can fluctuate and can reach above 100 degrees; in addition, should they need to evaluate outdoor equipment, the individual will be exposed to outdoor temperatures that fluctuate with weather conditions.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the Auxiliary Operator will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

* The noise level varies from normal to loud depending on construction activity and plant mode of operation.
