Mechanical Engineer

Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) designs, manufactures and sells world leading products needed to safely prepare and administer medication, such as: intravenous catheters, IV sets, connectors, flush syringes, Chloraprep infection prevention products, hazardous drug safety containment items and hypodermic syringes. MDS is focused on reducing complications, improving patient safety, and lowering total cost of care around the world. It is BDs largest Business Unit with $3.8B in annual revenue.

The Mechanical Engineer will be a part of the Concept & Technology (C&T;) team. The C&T; team is a front-end multi-disciplinary engineering team comprised of mechanical, electrical, software and research engineers that ideates and commercializes key strategic innovation initiatives for our MDS business. The team works closely with our MDS Strategic Innovation Group.

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer is a creative engineer that continuously ideates solutions to solve challenging customer needs and combines this drive with a strong sense for manufacturability, cost, and usability. The ideal candidate can quickly put ideas in CAD and subsequently prototype and test solutions to create a Proof of Concept, in close collaboration with other ME/EE engineers. Furthermore, the successful candidate will contribute to critical product development workstreams of disruptive, new-to-the-world products that have aggressive launch dates and a high level of visibility across the BD organization. The person will be responsible for specific mechanical aspects of these workstreams. Furthermore, person will provide timely updates to the mechanical and overall technical leads.

Responsibilities:

* Ideate solutions and rapidly develop Proof of Concepts and test these concepts, demonstrating ability of concepts to satisfy identified customer needs and product requirements.
* Deliver on mechanical design portion of overall project, with strong accountability for successful completion of agreed upon deliverables.
* Down-select solutions using a structured process and present both down-selection process and final design to technical lead
* Development of designs that create positive user-response and have relatively low manufacturing cost.
* Development of tolerance stacks, DOEs, and design guides.
* Ensures design process takes into account usability, moldability, ease of assembly considerations
* Management of internal and external partners to create components, assemblies, and cost estimates.

* Define, track and report progress of work-streams that have a high level of visibility within the company.

Qualifications:

Minimal

* BS in Mechanical Engineering
* Demonstratable experience with Ideation, CAD and Prototyping

Desired

Education

* MS or PhD in mechanical engineering

* Ability to solve complex mechanical problems with elegant mechanical designs
* Strong command of CAD (Solidworks/ProE) and experience with associated version control systems
* Rapid prototyping and testing using 3D printing/prototype molds
* Ability to succinctly present engineering challenges, considered solutions and process that led to selected solution.

Experience with:

* Concept development of electro-mechanical (medical) devices
* Providing design recommendation based on Pugh matrix or other selection tools.
* Simulation tools
* Generation and maintenance of risk analyses (DFMEA, URA, etc.)
* Development of transfer functions, statistical analysis, analysis of robustness against noise.
* creation of new concepts and development of related Intellectual Property (IP).
* Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) per ASME Y14.5.
* Metrology and Inspection such as CT, laser scanning.
* Prototyping techniques, such as 3D Printing, injection molding, metal stamping and bending, machining (CNC, lathe, drill press, etc.), ultrasonic welding.
* Expertise in generating product requirements, specifications, test protocols, and test reports.
* Plastic injection mold design for high volume products, up to and including qualifying production components.
* Experience contracting with, and managing, third party consultants within and outside the US.
* Design of jigs, fixtures, and related equipment for automated testing and assembly
* Developing hardware and software test fixtures using LabView application.
* IP generation
* Track record of strong performance in lean, multidisciplinary NPD/innovation teams
