About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  [SC00]

This position can be filled in Akron, OH or Fairmont, WV

The EMS SCADA Modeling Specialist works at FirstEnergy's Control Center with a team of analysts and engineers in support of the Energy Management System (EMS). The system is a critical, real-time, 7x24 application that monitors and controls the flow of power across the FirstEnergy transmission system and interconnections.

Responsibilities Include:

Providing support for EMS electrical one-line display development
Providing configuration of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) to facilitate command and control of substations.
Working with transmission operations on system requests
Supporting enhanced visualization projects for control rooms
Working with design engineers and/or field personnel to conduct remote system and equipment tests.
Assisting with testing upgrades to the software
Creating and executing comprehensive test plans, developing test cases, and assisting with integrations
Supporting operators and engineers in the use of the EMS
Working directly with other staff members to identify, evaluate, prioritize, and implement improvements consistent with business requirements.
Assisting in the creation of system documentation, version release notes, and training material. Conducting presentations and training as needed
Developing a solid understanding of processes in the FirstEnergy Transmission Operations line of business, keeping up with developments in the electric utility industry at large, and being able to speak the language of the business.

An employee hired at the Specialist III or IV level will be expected to perform all the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner.  Further, the Specialist III or IV level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above.

Qualifications include:

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, similar discipline required with 2 – 4 years related experience. In lieu of a degree, 4 – 6 years related experience required.

Related experience includes, but is not limited to:

Experience managing high-availability complex data sets, RTU configurations, SCADA communications and/or protocols.
Experience with real-time systems, real-time architectures and databases including modeling and revising data through software applications

Ability and willingness to travel to company sites, work flexible hours and be available for call-in and after-hours support (7x24 operations) as needed
Ability to effectively use standard PC software, including MS Windows and Office products, web-based systems, e-mail, relational database query tools.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds.
Experience in providing responsive and effective customer service.
Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and plan work, work on multiple concurrent tasks, and meet deadlines.

Qualifications at the Level III include all of the above plus 4 – 6 years of experience with a related degree. In lieu of a degree, 6 – 8 years related experience required.

Working knowledge of relevant work experience

Qualifications at the Level IV include all of the above plus 6+ years of experience. In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of experience required.

In-depth knowledge of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution, generation)
Data communications and networking skills/knowledge
Previous SCADA and/or engineering experience
Demonstrated analytical skills to effectively resolve technical problems.
Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and RTU Programming
Familiarity with engineering drafting software
